Overview of the CFC/HCFC/HFC Control in the Refrigeration And Air Conditioning Industry Training Program. Now known as “Canada’s Ozone Layer Protection Awareness Program for Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems” Certification Examination

The Canadian Environmental Protection Act eliminated the production and import of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) on January 1, 1996.

CFCs, HCFCs, and the new HFC alternatives all have environmental impact. For this reason, Environment Canada and the refrigeration and air conditioning industry must ensure that refrigerants are not released into the atmosphere. To Accomplish this objective, Environment Canada published a Code of Practice for the reduction of fluorocarbon refrigerant emissions, This Code Spells out how to minimize or eliminate emissions when manufacturing, installing, operating, maintaining or disposing of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration equipment. This Code recognizes that service personnel have the greatest control over the use and disposal of refrigerants and it calls for special training for this group so they can eliminate refrigerant emissions.

The Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) supports Environment Canada’s initiatives in this regard and in partnership with Environment Canada and provincial ministries across Canada, has accepted responsibility for developing this training program.

The CFC/HCFC/HFC Control in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry is based upon the most current information available at the time of its writing. Course participants should recognize that industry and regulatory agencies are responding to the challenge of reducing all refrigerant emissions and new materials, equipment, techniques and rules are being developed to bring this about. Service people must expect ongoing change in the industry and must keep up to date on new developments.

Successful completion of this course and exam will provide the participant with an Environmental Awareness Card. This card must not be mistaken for a trade qualification certificate or permit to work. Trade qualification certificates and work permits are issued by provincial ministries of education or labour and not by ministries of the environment. Further information can be obtained by contacting the Heating, Refrigeration and Air conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) directly.
